03 · Erasmus+ step by step

Erasmus+ step by step: school, after the Matura, university

With Erasmus+ you never apply to the EU directly. The funding is always requested by the sending institution: your school or your university156,157. It selects participants, signs the contracts and pays out the money.

Route 1 · now, via HTL Villach

Compulsory internship of 2 to 4 weeks in another EU country

  1. By autumn: find a company in another EU country, for example in the employer table with the filter “no visa”. Having a placement lined up already is an advantage142.
  2. Advice: talk to the Erasmus advisers of the IT department, Prof. DI Heidrun Müller-Stegmüller (room 219) or Prof. DI Stefanie Dabringer (room 220)142.
  3. By 31 Dec 2026: apply by email to erasmus@htl-villach.at for an internship in summer 2027. Ask whether a CV and motivation letter are wanted; both can be made with the CV generator and the application generator.
  4. Selection: the school selects participants and fills in the forms with you142.
  5. Before you leave: the school, the host company and you sign a learning agreement with your learning goals. The school may also sign a grant agreement with you158.
  6. Language: through a link from the school you get the EU's free language course (Online Language Support)159.
  7. Under 18: Erasmus+ can co-fund an accompanying person for minors158. The Austrian e-card covers necessary treatment in other EU countries.
  8. Afterwards: you receive the Europass Mobility record of what you learned158,160, and the internship counts as your compulsory internship142.

Route 2 · up to 12 months after the Matura

Graduate internship, 10 days to 12 months

  1. In the Matura year (autumn 2027): ask the HTL's Erasmus team whether the school sends graduates on internships. Individuals cannot apply for the funding themselves157.
  2. Intermediary organisation: regional consortia exist for graduates and learners. The OeAD lists some for Styria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vorarlberg, none for Carinthia. That is why the HTL is the first route157.
  3. Find a placement: a company abroad; from 90 days the internship counts as “ErasmusPro”157.
  4. Deadline: the internship must take place within 12 months of graduating156.
  5. Documents: as in route 1: learning agreement before, Europass Mobility record after158.

Route 3 · at university, example TU Wien

Internship of 2 to 12 months in a company or research

  1. Find the placement yourself: a company or research institution in the European Economic Area or Türkiye, not an EU institution. TU Wien does not arrange placements161.
  2. Learning Agreement for Traineeships: create it online in Mobility Online; you, the university and the host company sign it. Allow 2 to 3 months from the company's acceptance161.
  3. Deadline: submit at least 30 days before the start; for an internship after graduating, 60 days before the end of your studies161.
  4. Money: a monthly amount plus a travel grant, more for train and bus. TU Wien currently funds at most 4 months161; the University of Vienna pays €620 to €670 a month on top of the salary162.
  5. Stay enrolled: you may not complete your degree during the internship, except for a graduate internship161.
  6. Afterwards: apply for recognition at the study office; a voluntary internship is recorded in the Diploma Supplement161.

Advice at TU Wien: julia.kohl@tuwien.ac.at (advice, agreement, funding). At other universities the International Office is responsible.

Staying longer than 3 months in the host country? Then you register there; you need an ID and a confirmation of work or internship163. The deadlines for each country are on the page Working abroad.

04 · Good to know

Earn money without losing grants

Family allowance

Until 19 your earnings do not count

In Austria, your own income from a holiday job or internship does not count towards the family allowance (Familienbeihilfe) up to and including the year in which you turn 19. From the year of your 20th birthday a limit of €17,212 taxable income a year applies; above it, only the excess is paid back.

Combining

Many grants can be stacked

At university, the Erasmus+ grant comes on top of the internship salary and the Austrian study grant. Study grant recipients receive an additional grant for a semester abroad. Exception: anyone funded by Fulbright Austria cannot also apply for scholarships from the Austrian science ministry.

05 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Which scholarships are open to HTL pupils?

For pupils in Carinthia, 4 programmes fit best: the Erasmus+ internship abroad via their own HTL, the state school grant from year 10 of schooling, the Jugend Innovativ competition and the paid FFG Talente internships from age 15.

How much does Erasmus+ pay for an internship abroad?

For HTL pupils, Erasmus+ pays €70 a day for the first 14 days and €49 from day 15 in Germany, Italy or France, plus travel costs by distance. 4 weeks in Germany therefore come to €1,666 plus travel.
