01 · Designs
The content stays the same; the form depends on the recipient. Even the University of Cambridge points out that its guides apply to the UK and that a CV can look quite different in other countries148.
International design
One column, no photo, no table. The applicant tracking system Greenhouse, used by SpaceX among others, does not parse photos, graphics, tables, columns or contact details in headers or footers correctly, and cannot parse files over 2.5 MB at all143.
Austria design
Timeline on the left, photo top right, place and date at the end. In a karriere.at survey, 65% were in favour of a photo; it is not mandatory149. If you are fresh out of school, put education before work experience150.
Europass design
The ESA Academy requires a CV in Europass format as a PDF, at most 2 pages, without pictures151. This design follows the Europass structure. The official Europass editor is free in 31 languages152.

04 · Photo
In Austria a photo is common but optional149. The University of Oxford lists date of birth, marital status and nationality as details that are not needed153. A field experiment in Germany showed how strongly a photo can affect invitations: with an otherwise identical application, an applicant with a Turkish name and a headscarf photo was invited to interview much less often154. That is why the photo is always optional here, and 2 of the 3 designs do without one.
05 · FAQ
For school pupils, 1 page. Harvard advises students to use 1 page, MIT 1, at most 2 pages145,146. In a study with 482 recruiting professionals, 2 pages were preferred 2.3 times as often overall, but only 1.4 times as often for entry-level positions155. With little experience, 2 pages are rarely filled with substance.
A PDF with real text, not a scanned image. Greenhouse cannot parse CVs over 2.5 MB143. For email applications, karriere.at recommends a single PDF named “Bewerbung_Vorname_Nachname.pdf” (application_first name_last name)134. With English headings the generator names the CV file “CV_Firstname_Lastname.pdf”.
For ESA, international companies and portals such as SpaceX's, yes. The ESA Academy requires all documents in English151. In the generator, “English” switches all headings; you then write your own text in English.
