CV for art and Digital Arts: 1 content, 3 designs, ready as PDF

For a studio internship you need a different CV than for a grant: the art college MCAD recommends the artist CV for exhibitions, grants and residencies, and the standard résumé for jobs and internships162. The generator turns your details into both, plus a version for Austria with a photo.

01 · Designs

Which design for which application?

The content stays the same; the form depends on the recipient. Even the University of Cambridge points out that a CV can look quite different in other countries163.

Studio design

For studios and agencies, no photo

One column, no photo, no table. Epic Games and Riot Games advertise their positions through the applicant tracking system Greenhouse164,165. Greenhouse does not parse photos, graphics, tables, columns or contact details in headers or footers correctly166.

Austria design

For companies in Austria, photo optional

Timeline on the left, photo at the top right, town and date at the end. In a karriere.at survey, 65% were in favour of a photo; it is not required167.

Artist design

For grants, exhibitions and residencies

Structured according to the College Art Association: education, awards and grants, exhibitions, each with the year first and the newest first, without portrait photo, images or colour168.

02 · Generator

Enter your CV, check the preview, save as PDF

Fill in the fields and the preview follows immediately. “Load example” shows an invented student with invented festivals and awards, so you can see what good entries look like. When you switch design, your content stays the same.

The generator needs JavaScript. Without JavaScript, the tips on this page remain fully readable.

03 · Artist CV

The artist CV: what goes in and in what order

The College Art Association, the US professional association for art in higher education, has published guidelines for the artist CV168. Art colleges such as MCAD in Minneapolis refer to them162.

Order

Education, awards, exhibitions

After name and contact details come education, then awards, grants and residencies, then exhibitions, followed by commissions, collections and publications. You may rearrange the order if another section is stronger168.

Year first

Newest first

Each entry begins with the year, followed by title, venue and city; the newest is at the top168. The year appears only on the first entry of each year162.

Length

Short and complete

1 to 4 pages according to the College Art Association, with your name on every page from page 2168. MCAD advises students to use at most 2 pages, ideally 1162.

Art only

Plain and to the point

Jobs unrelated to art do not belong in it162. Keep the design plain: no portrait photo, images or coloured type, as a PDF168.

A tip from MCAD: keep a complete list of everything you have done and choose from it for each application162. With “Remember on this device”, your list stays in the generator.

04 · Photo

Photo: common in Austria, usually left out internationally

In Austria a photo is common, but optional167. The University of Oxford names date of birth, marital status and nationality as details that are not needed169. A field experiment in Germany showed how strongly a photo can affect invitations: with an otherwise identical application, an applicant with a Turkish name and a headscarf photo was invited considerably less often170. That is why the photo is always optional here, and 2 of the 3 designs do without one.

05 · Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long can a CV for an internship be?

Harvard advises students to use 1 page, MIT 1, at most 2 pages171,172. In a study with 482 recruiting professionals, 2 pages were preferred 2.3 times as often overall, but only 1.4 times as often for entry-level positions173. The artist CV may have 1 to 4 pages168.

When do I need an artist CV?

For exhibitions, grants, residencies and submissions to galleries or museums. For jobs and internships, including in art and design, you use the standard résumé, according to the career centre of the art college MCAD162.

Which file format and which file name?

PDF with real text, not a scanned image. Greenhouse does not parse CVs over 2.5 MB166. For email applications, karriere.at recommends a single PDF named “Bewerbung_Vorname_Nachname.pdf” (application_first name_last name)154.

Is my data stored or sent?

No. The PDF is created in your browser. Only if you tick “Remember on this device” do your entries stay in this browser’s storage until you press “Delete all”.

Next step: the cover letter

Subject line, short email and cover letter for a work placement, position, grant or open call. You can take your name and studies from the CV with one click if you remember it on this device.
